At DHEE Hospitals – Department of Cardiology, we believe every patient deserves respectful, safe and transparent care. This page sets out the rights you have as a patient, and the responsibilities that help us give you the best possible care. It is based on the principles of the Charter of Patients’ Rights and Responsibilities followed in India.
Your Rights as a Patient
1. Right to Respectful and Dignified Care
You will be treated with courtesy, dignity and compassion at all times, regardless of your age, gender, religion, caste, language, financial status, health condition or background. You have the right to privacy during examinations, procedures and discussions about your health.
2. Right to Emergency Care
If you have a cardiac or other medical emergency, you have the right to receive emergency medical attention and stabilising treatment without delay.
3. Right to Information
You have the right to clear information, in a language you understand, about:
- your diagnosis, the nature of your condition and the expected outcome;
- the tests and treatments recommended, with their benefits, risks and alternatives;
- the name and role of the doctors and staff treating you; and
- the expected cost of your care and what it includes.
4. Right to Informed Consent
Before any procedure, such as angiography, angioplasty, pacemaker implantation or surgery, your doctor will explain what it involves, the risks and the alternatives, and will seek your consent. You may ask questions, take time to decide, and refuse or withdraw your consent, where it is safe and lawful to do so.
5. Right to Confidentiality
Your medical information and records are kept confidential. They are shared only with the healthcare team involved in your care, or with others where you have given permission or where the law requires disclosure.
6. Right to Access Your Records and Reports
You have the right to ask for copies of your medical records, test reports, discharge summary and other documents about your treatment. Please make the request to our team, and they will guide you through the process.
7. Right to a Second Opinion
You may seek a second opinion from another doctor or hospital at any time, and we will support you by providing the records you need. We also welcome patients who bring existing reports for a second opinion.
8. Right to Choose
Where medically appropriate, you have the right to choose among the treatment options offered, to know about alternatives, and to decide where you would like to obtain medicines and diagnostic tests.
9. Right to Safe, Quality Care
You have the right to care that follows accepted medical standards, in a clean and safe environment, delivered by qualified professionals. If your care needs to continue elsewhere, you have the right to be properly referred or transferred, with your records and clear information.
10. Right to Fair and Transparent Billing
You have the right to an itemised bill, an explanation of the charges, and information about insurance and cashless support, so that there are no surprises.
11. Right to Be Heard
You have the right to share feedback, raise concerns and make a complaint about your care or experience. Doing so will not affect the treatment you receive.
12. Right to Participate in Your Care
You and your family may take part in decisions about your treatment, and you may ask for education on your condition, medicines, diet and lifestyle so that you can look after your heart after you leave the hospital.
13. Right to Leave
You have the right to request discharge from hospital. Your doctor will explain any risks of leaving before treatment is complete, and will help you plan for follow-up care.
